The History Behind Google! How Did It Start!
In September, 2018, Google, celebrated its 20th birthday! Google has grown into an adult. But, lets find out how all this started.
On January, 1996 two students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, made their Ph.D. at Stanford University, California. The two of them were working on a research program that later was to change the lives of all of us.
Earlier, in 1995, Larry Page and Sergey Brin would be in Stanford. Larry, 22, a graduate of the University of Michigan, wants to enroll in the college. Sergey, 21, has taken over to tour him. According to some testimonies, at their first meeting they disagreed almost on every issue. Their friendship did not start from the beginning.
Until 1996, conventional search engines ranked the results by measuring how many times the search terms appeared on the page. The two students created a better system that analysed the relationships between the web pages. They named the new system PageRank technology, which determined the relevance of a website to the number and importance of the pages leading back to it (backlinks).
How did they choose the name Google?
They named their search engine, Google. The word “Google” came from an anagram of the word “Googol,” the mathematical term introduced by Milton Sirotta for the number 10100 written: “1 followed by 100 zeros.” By doing so, Google wants to signal the company’s mission to organize the vast amount of Internet information.
At the beginning, Google was running only on Stanford University’s website, with domains google.stanford.edu and z.stanford.edu. The domain name for Google was established on September 15, 1997 and the company was established on September 4, 1998.
